Public ticket sales are now open for the 2014 NRHS Convention in Springdale, Arkansas on June 10-15. Highlighting this year's convention is three days of passenger train rides on the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad, traveling rail lines that don’t normally host passenger trains. All trains will exclusively be powered by the A&M's surviving fleet of vintage Alco locomotives, plus an Alco-led “photo freight” through the Ozark Mountains (including night photo sessions).
Other events include rides on the Fort Smith Trolley Museum and the Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railroad. Special tours will be held at the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad shops in Springdale and the 1903 Frisco Depot in Fort Smith. Convention-goers can also enjoy the first ever behind-the-scenes tour of the Silver Dollar City steam railroad in Branson, Missouri.
On the weekend of June 14-15, Amtrak’s historic Exhibit Train will be in Springdale for a free display featuring a specially painted locomotive to commemorate America’s veterans and exciting displays showcasing the history of the nation’s intercity passenger railroad.
Non-rail events include tours of the historic town of Fayetteville and Eureka Springs, nearby War Eagle Mill, the world-famous Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the Walmart Visitors Center located in the original Walton's Five and Dime, and the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks. Guest speakers will also present history and rail education seminars. Photo © by Ted Ellis.
