MUSEUM GRAND REOPENING

The Redevelopment of Washington St. in Norwalk is complete. On May 3rd, the SONO Switchtower Museum will be opening, completing the bridge to bridge reconstruction of So. Norwalk. The ribbon cutting ceremony and Tower dedication will commence Saturday, May 3rd at 11:00 AM. First built in 1896, this building controlled the switches, signals and tracks of the New Haven Railroad from Low St. to the swing bridge on the Norwalk River.

Shortly after closing in 1984, this building was in near ruin. A redevelopment effort was started between the city of Norwalk and the Western Connecticut Chapter of the NRHS to restore this structure as a museum and gift shop. The event is open to all and museum hours are 10 to 4 on weekends, May through October. Admission is by donation. Visit www.westctnrhs.org for more details.Lisle Station Park is pleased to host "Women and the American Railroad" an interpretive/photographic exhibit curated by Shirley Burman. Burman, a photographer (her work is currently apart of the "Railroads and Photography: 150 Years of Great Images" traveling exhibit), lecturer, author, and researcher of women's railroad history, created the exhibit which has traveled since 1990. Railroads have employed women since 1838 to the present time - not in great numbers - but women left their mark never the less.

This exhibit showcases some of these women's contributions to railroad history through the collection of historical and contemporary photographs. The photos depict working women from the 1900's, through the World Wars, through the nineties. The exhibit was installed inside Lisle Station Park's Depot Museum. The Lisle train depot, built in 1874, has had its baggage room converted into a gallery for the occasion. The environment will only add to our visitor's experience of the exhibit.
