The
fall national meeting of the Board of Directors of the NRHS
is being held October 19 - 21 at the Quality Inn in Chambersburg,
PA. Besides business meetings, there will be several rail history
related events and a gala banquet for meeting attendees to participate
in. Meeting events from the weekend were covered by the NRHS
Director of Internet Services and reported below:

Activities (all weekend) -
For those with interests besides railroading, the local area
featured a wide variety of activities. Downtown Chambersburg
has a bustling business district and Oct. 20 was the Chamberfest,
an annual festival of vendors and crastman presenting their
wares in a four-block area of the city that's closed off to
vehicular traffic. Bargain hunters also had the option of shopping
at the outlets just south of Hagerstown, MD. Just east of Chambersburg
attendees could take in one of the most famous locations in
the American Civil War, the Gettysburg Battlefield.
Friday,
October 19 - Historic Rail Sites Tour of Altoona, Pennsylvania
- After
departing the hotel at 7:45 am, the days started just west of
Altoona with a visit to the world famous horseshoe curve. Next
the group visited the Allegheny Portage Railroad, a system of
inclined planes which lifed canal boats over the easter continental
divide from the Susquehanna River Basin into the Ohio Basin.
At noon, Lunch was served at the Station Inn, a bed and breakfast
located along the main line of Norfolk Southern (former Pennsylvania
Railroad) just west of the Horseshoe Curve. The day concluded
with a visit to the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum in downtown
Altoona. The $49.00 trip included all admissions, lunch, and
bus transportation.
Friday,
October 19 - Narrated Tour of Historic Railroad Buildings in
Chambersburg -
After departing the hotel at 2:00 PM, participants toured the
railroad sites of Chambersburg, which was headquarters of the
Cumberland Valley Railroad. Many of the buildings are still
standing. The tour concludesdwith a ice cream treat at the OLYMPIA
Ice Cream Parlor. The $10.00 trip included bus transportation
aboard a diesel-powered TROLLEY BUS.

October 20 - NRHS Board of Directors Meeting - 8:30 AM at
the hotel. The official fall business meeting of the directors
of the National Railway Historical Society. The following were
some of the highlights of the meeting:
- The minutes of the previous meeting were presented. Minor
corrections offered.
- President Molloy thanked Cumberland Valley Chapter, our
hosts, for their efforts in making the weekend a success.
- Financial and status reports on the array of NRHS programs
were provided.
- The annual election of National Officers took place.
- The new Editor and Production Editor of the Bulletin
were named (Hank Morris and Jeff Smith). Frank Tatnall,
long-time editor, has stepped down after 14 years of fantastic
service as editor.
- The title of Webmaster (Director - NRHS Web Site) was
changed to Director, Internet Services to better reflect
the totality of services provided on the net.
- The appointment of our new Director of Membership Development,
Mr. Jim Andrisen, was announced.
- Carl Jensen was appointed as the new Convention Committee
Chair. Judy Calvert stepped down after ten years of solid
service.
- Discussion on increased security around railroads since
the 11th of September. Additional information can be found

- 2002 RAILCAMP dates
were announced.
- Convention and upcoming meeting announcements were made.
