Perhaps one of the best night photo sessions in years began at 8:00 at the Williams Depot in grand style. Camera hounds were loaded aboard a special shuttle train, consisting of the #3751 and 3 vintage Grand Canyon Railway (GCR) coaches to the night photo spot in the yard of the GCR. The session was led and instructed by Steve Barry, of Railfan & Railroad Magazine along with numerous other noted rail photographers, including NRHS Staff Photographer Alex Mayes. Amtrak, Grand Canyon Railway, and the #3751 steam crew also cooperated to make it a real bonanza for photograhers.

After detraining and setting up the photo line, Steve Barry gave all attendees pointers on how to properly set up their cameras for the shots. Then the parade of photographs began with carefully orchestrated lighting of the subject rail equipment: The photo setups included:

  • #3751 & 3 coaches
  • #3751 with 3 coaches & GCR #4960
  • #3751 with 3 coaches & GCR #4960 and GCR #18
  • GCR Alco FP4 A-B set with 3 coaches and GCR #18
  • GCR Alco FP4 A-B set with 3 coaches and Amtrak #4 & #7 Genesis Locomotives
  • GCR Alco FP4 A-B-B-A Set

The session wound up around midnight and passengers were then shuttled back to the station.
