    Southern Crescent

Southern Railway's legendary Southern Crescent rolls through RO interlocking in Arlington, Virginia as it approaches the Potomac River bridge in September 1978. Four green and white E8s power the 18 car train of all stainless steel equipment. On the left is a Conrail freight departing Potomac Yard to head north. The Southern Crescent made its last run on February 1, 1979, the overhead catenary for the Pennsylvania Railroad's electric locomotives was dismantled in the early 1980s, and Potomac Yard was closed in 1989. Amtrak's Crescent now provides service on this route between New York and New Orleans.
