    Thomas Viaduct
    **Photo Robert A. Pinsky

This viaduct, built in 1835 by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, still carries the heavy mainline Washington/Capital subdivision (Baltimore - Washington Line) of the B & O over the Patapsco River near Elkridge, Maryland. At the time it was built, naysayers said it would not stand up under it's own weight. The bridge has a total of six stone arches, built on a curve - it was the first stone arch bridge built on a curve in the United States.
