Zephyr |
The
Denver & Rio Grande Western's legendary "Rio
Grande Zephyr" pauses at Glenwood Springs,
Colorado in October 1979 while baggage and express
is loaded. The D&RGW declined to join Amtrak
in 1971, and was therefore required to operate this
streamliner between Denver and Salt Lake City. The
costs of running the Zephyr escalated astronomically
over the years, and on August 31, 1983 the Zephyr
made it last run. Amtrak's "California Zephyr"
now provides service on this route. The Glenwood
Railroad Museum, a project of the Western Colorado
NRHS chapter now occupies the east wing of this
historic 1904 D&RGW depot. |
