1970's
by NRHS Bulletin Staff
INTRODUCTION
Lawrance C Steingarten, a member of NRHS from 1973 until
his untimely death in 2002, was a dedicated railfan (and bird
enthusiast) and an enthusiastic photographer. Born in New
York City, he had a long career in the transportation industry
dating back to the 1960s, working for Chessie System,
Penn Central, the United States Railway Association, the New
York State Inspector Generals Office (monitoring operations
of the New York City Transit Authority), ultimately retiring
from Metro-North Railroad.
Larry, an avid traveler, operated Challenger Tours, a travel
agency aimed at specialized rail-enthusiasts itineraries.
He organized and led several international tours for the Philadelphia
Chapter to destinations such as South Africa, new Zealand,
and China. Generously donating his commissions to the Philadelphia
Chapter. At one time or another he visited all continents
except Antarctica.
The Photographs of the Delaware and Hudson Railway published
here represent a small part of his photographic work.
The following photos are a reprinted subset of those that
appeared in the full length picture essay in the National
Railway Bulletin.
